Reboot Time

Day 120 Week 18 Q2 Monday, April 29, 2024

Do you know how when you are writing and you used to use paper, that sometimes you had to crumble up the paper and throw it in the garbage pail. Or psychologically to do the same with a digital file you were creating, to just toss it and start again?

Well, sometimes you need to do this with a new journal or a new computer or a new phone. We all need to reboot periodically. It is not a mark of failure. It is a mark of success. Sometimes you have to just let go of what you were working on and start a fresh. Sometimes you have to let go of the way you were even working and start fresh. In essence, you get the opportunity to do this every single day. And sometimes we take ourselves up on that opportunity.

There are also so many opportunities. Like the first day of a month, or the first day of the year. And it can even be on the first day of the week.

It doesn’t matter so much when, or how. It does matter that you recognize what it is time to do this, and that you do it. This is probably even more important for creative outliers, then for anyone else because we tend to create outlier amounts of chaos as well as outlier amounts of productivity. They sort of go together. It is only those for willing to make change who both make a mess and create tomorrow.

I even have one friend who buys a new computer every year or two and only uses plain vanilla apps mostly which came and installed on the machine so he does not have to spend time upgrading operating systems and getting back to where his system was knowable. his line of reasoning was the value of a computer does not diminish that much in a year or so and since computers are inexpensive enough now to be expense that losing a couple hundred bucks a year he never had to spend time reconstituting useful work environment digitally.

I do not believe the quality of his work was in any way diminished by rebooting frequently. In fact, it may have been one of the reasons why the quality of his work was so high and why he was so reliable because he was not allowing himself to get forced into being an IT person many hours per week.

The bottom line is we all have to reboot whatever that means and just as the computer sometimes need to be turned off and turned on again to become sensible and reasonable, so do we, and while we’re at it, do it to your phone too.
