Winter Solstice 2023

Day 354 Week 51 Q4 Thursday, December 21, 2023

Today is the shortest day of the year and the longest night of the year. Tomorrow, each day gets a little longer. This must have felt miraculous for people once they began to track it. And then, as it became common, it became mostly ignored and no longer miraculous. But I, for one, love to encounter the miraculous as often as possible, and today’s as good a day as any and probably better.

What new projects can begin at this turning point? Or what already begun projects can reach a tipping point? We can use any day we want as an excuse for change, but once the cosmos is on your side, it seems to have a little bit more momentum behind it. Sometimes, in order to stay on the right side of the tipping point, all you need to do is continue to stick to what you have already been doing. In other words, this cosmological event does not have to indicate a change in your behavior, even if it indicates a change in your status. These things are related but not as tightly coupled as you might think.

For example, it takes a certain amount of time for a new behavior to begin to manifest a new state. And if this new state becomes apparent at the time of a cosmological event, then so much the better, for it becomes easier to remember.

It seems incredible that two days ago, we had a major flood, and life was turned upside down, and today, it is back to being right side up. Of course, there is still plenty of evidence and cleanup required, but psychologically, we humans are really good at adapting to situations. As usual, the incoming impinges upon us, and we adapt and even get to take away something good from having our life turned upside down because that is a good time to examine what is going on anyway, without interruptions from time to time, we can become unconscious of where we are what we are doing and what needs to be done.

I do not know what the psychological significance of a cosmological event, such as a solstice, and another natural event, such as a flood coinciding within 48 hours, with a stick-to-th-knitting awareness of proper behavior that has been habituated adequately to yield a tipping point. But I am willing to bet that these things are lined up for a reason. This is the curiosity of the creative mind. Even if there is not a reason, we find connections and create one for each of us to exercise that superpower of adaptivity to create our own world, and then live it, and we do this very quickly.

So quickly that these miraculous alignments can become washed out with the tide during the excitement of tomorrow, so take the time while it is happening to get a good look at it.
